Grandma Used to Sing
..Every night while she was praying… over my head, over my head, I hear music oh lord.
That King’s X song was the beginning of an awakening for me of music.
Music is a huge part of my daily life. It’s about the only thing that gives me peace and as I saw Ordinary Girl play this little game, I thought that was a great idea. Then The Exterminator decided to make a mockery of it, but it was still entertaining and I expect nothing less. Phillychief decided to jump in with a little more my style.
Of course I’m weeks behind because I don’t really expect anybody to know my music nor care to, but for my own entertainment’s sake I’ll shuffle.
So here it is. Skipping, of course, all the post rock and post metal in my iPod since there really isn’t any lyrics to such tunes. Skipping, as well, any songs in which the first line is the title.
Starting with a scorcher from the mid-90’s.
- Dying felt so god damned good today
- Stay with me a while, rise above the vile
- How do you preach the word if you don’t know how to read
- Well I don’t know why I came here tonight
- You and me are the disease and the germs are spreading
- Yeah, the rain came independence day OG
- Penetrate, penetrate all the simple minds
- If this is a dream I’m happy you’re having it with me
- Moon hangs around, A blade over my head
- It is not a good if you’re not looking good
- I hate you and you hate me I cannot look at you and see
- Listen to the tales and romanticize
- I don’t know whose side I’m on
- Amplified on fire, strapped to take you higher
- You won’t admit it, but it’s true- I’m happy without you
- Wake up son of my mine, momma got something to tell you
- So tell me, when you took the practice Scholastic Aptitude Test
- I’ve sewn my seeds with a metric grosse
- They took the drugs and left you stranded down in Mexico
- Free at last I’m the past
- Found myself a way to rid myself clean of pain
- Overhead the albatross hangs motionless upon the air OG
- After defying the grip of the hangman’s noose
- Chaos, it’s just the beginning
- Yesterday when I was just a boy

Hmmm…
Well, #4 is definitely Stuck in the Middle With You, but I don’t suppose it’s the Susanna Hoffs version I own, so I’ll go with the original by Jeff Healey.
#6 Happy - King’s X (I was kind of looking for King’s X songs since you mentioned them, otherwise I might have missed it)
#22 Echoes - Pink Floyd (you actually put this on an mp3 player? I was once engaged to a Pink Floyd fanatic)
Sorry, the rest is Greek to me. I have no ideas.
OG- #4 is Stuck in the Middle, but originally recorded when Jeff Healey was just a young pup.
Nailed #6 and #22. King’s X is one of my all time favorite bands.
For the record, I have 15 songs on my iPod that are over 20 minutes long. Most by Godspeed You! Black Emperor which is pure genius and a few Miles Davis songs.
He wasn’t the original. OK, now I’m a bit embarrassed.
Yeah, I used to listen to a lot of Kings X. I got a chance to see them in concert once but had to turn down going because I was deep in finals. In retrospect, it would have been worth skipping some study, but at the time I was too worried about how I’d do on the test.
The song was originally done by Stealer’s Wheel in 1972. According to a quick search I did, Stuck in the Middle was covered by the two you mentioned as well as six other times including The Eagles of Death Metal, Juice Newton, and Keith Urban.
Oddly, I have never heard any covers of Stuck in the Middle.
Don’t worry about being embarrassed, nobody reads this page ;).
I saw King’s X once. I did skip class to see them when they opened for AC/DC. I never have had a chance to see them headline though.
